Role of pulmonary lymphatics in chronic pulmonary edema.

چکیده
• Clinically, the development of pulmonary edema is frequently associated with an elevation of left atrial pressure. However, overt pulmonary edema does not always occur with such pressure elevations, even when the plasma oncotic pressure is greatly exceeded. It is conceivable that a dilatation of the pulmonary lymphatic system might remove fluid from the lung and prevent, or delay, the development of overt pulmonary edema. In experimental studies on the dog, it has been demonstrated that lymph flow from the lungs increased with an acute elevation of the pulmonary venous pressure"; however, the quantity of lymph was small and apparently ineffective in preventing the development of pulmonary edema. The critical question, however, of the extent of the pulmonary lymph flow in chronic pulmonary edema remained unanswered. It was the purpose of the current study to determine what i*ole, if any, the lymphatics play in the prevention of chronic pulmonary edema.

While pulmonary thromboembolism is common, thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension is very rare. The present case is a 35 year old woman with chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension, who presented with severe dyspnea and leg edema, following an earlier thrombotic event of 10 years earlier, after her her second childbearing. She also had a history of the first childbearing complicated with c...
متن کاملPulmonary Lymphatics and Edema Accumulation
In a past study of hyperoxia-induced lung injury, extensive lymphatic filling occurred that could have resulted from lymphatic proliferation or simple lymphatic recruitment. This study sought to determine if brief lung injury could produce similar changes, to show which lymphatic compartments fill with edema, and to compare their three-dimensional structure. Tracheostomized rats were ventilated...

متن کاملMathematical Modelling of Pulmonary Edema
The excess accumulation of water in lung interstitial or alveolar is called pulmonary edema which is caused by factors that upset the normal Starling balance in micro-circulation. Pulmonary edema disturbs the alveolar gas exchanges which are normally regulated by the respiratory system. Mathematical modelling of pulmonary edema may help to predict the lung conditions and the mechanisms involved...
